Journey back and learn about Dublin Castle, one of the most important buildings in Irish History. Dublin Castle has fulfilled many roles throughout the years. Built between 1208 and 1220 on a site of a Viking settlement, it represents some of the oldest surviving architecture in the city. It was the center of English power in Ireland for over seven centuries until it was taken over by the Irish Free State in 1922 following Ireland's independence. Dublin Castle has appeared in numerous films including Michael Colins, Becoming Jane, and the television series The Tudors, where it doubles as the Vatican in the pilot.
