Leaving behind Edinburgh, stop at Doune Castle, the film location for Castle Leoch in the hit ‘Outlander’ TV show. Doune Castle is a magnificent late 14th century courtyard castle. Its most striking feature is the 100ft high gatehouse which includes the splendid Lord's Hall with its musician’s gallery, double fireplace and carved oak screen. Continue through the magnificent Glencoe and on to Fort William and search for the place where Jamie was held captive by Captain Randall. Travel along the banks of Loch Ness and see if you can catch a glimpse of the famous monster Nessie! Visit the ruins of Urquhart Castle, once one of Scotland's largest castles and its remains include a tower house that commands wonderful views of the famous loch and Great Glen.

Visit the stunning area of Glen Affric, just past the village of Cannich. A walk through this glen will take you into the remains of the Great Caledonian Pine Forest where Jamie and Claire wandered after their wedding. Then on to Castle Leod which is the home of the Chief of the Clan MacKenzie . Castle Leod is one of the most beautiful, romantic and unspoilt castles in the Highlands and it has been lived in by the same family for over 500 years. The last stop today is at Beauly Priory, the burying place of the Lovats. It was founded around 1230 by monks of the Valliscaulian order and their successors lived here for the next 300 years until the Protestant Reformation of 1560 brought their cloistered and contemplative life to an abrupt end. Today their legacy lives on, in their pretty, tree fringed abbey church, roofless but otherwise largely intact.

Spend the morning exploring the historic city of Inverness, nestled in the magnificent Highlands on a walking tour with a Local Specialist. Visit the battlefields of Culloden, where in 1746 the Jacobite cause, with Bonnie Prince Charlie's leadership, was crushed. Over 1,200 perished in just an hour in the brutal fight, and the award-winning visitor center presents the events leading up to the battle, as well as the battle itself and the aftermath. This is also where Claire and Jamie said their goodbyes before the disastrous Battle of Culloden. Go in search of the mysterious Craigh na Dun, a split stone of the stone circle that sent Claire back to Jacobite times. Although fictional this could have been inspired by the Clava Cairns, which dates to the Bronze Age.

Bid farewell to Inverness and the Highlands and travel through Cairngorms National Park to  The Highland Folk Museum. Here you will recognise many of the sights featured in the series “Outlander” and get a flavour for how Highland people lived from the 18th to 20th centuries. Continue the Kingdom of Fife, and visit the village of Falkland, that’s heavily featured in the series. Stop at the Covenanter Hotel, which was "Mrs Bairds B&B". Walk around the town and see the Falkland Parish Church, which was renamed Dalneigh Parish Church and wander around the area surrounding the Bruce Fountain. Next visit the Royal Burgh of Culross. Culross is the location for the fictional village of Cranesmuir. It is a fascinating example of a town that time has forgot. The National Trust for Scotland has worked tirelessly to preserve the 16th Century town centre including the Town House that was built in 1626. In Culross, you will find Claire's herb garden and many of the buildings that feature in the show. Continue to Edinburgh to soak in the atmosphere on your final evening.
