First, have you seen this ring and second, do you know what it means?\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>This is the Claddagh Ring, which originates from a fishing village, called Claddagh (\u201cshore\u201d in Irish) across the River Corrib from Galway<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>

This unique piece of jewelry has evolved over nearly 400 years to become deeply recognizable Irish symbol of affection.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span>\u201cThe ring shows two hands holding a heart which wears a crown,\u201d is the direct explanation from <\/span>Thomas Dillon\u2019s<\/span><\/a>, a Galway-based jeweler that has been making the iconic band since 1750. \u201cThis motif is explained in the phrase: \u201cLet Love and Friendship reign.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The One True(est) Claddagh Ring Story<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>

As with many elements of Ireland, there are plentiful stories and legends associated with this ring\u2019s beginning.\u00a0<\/span>According to Dillon\u2019s, the ring\u2019s heritage is overwhelmingly associated with the Joyce family, one of the Tribes of Galway.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

However \u2013 this is a tale of two Joyce\u2019s.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

There\u2019s your first Joyce: Margaret Joyce, whose wealthy Spanish merchant husband left her his fortune in the 16<\/span>th<\/span> century, which she subsequently used to build bridges in the Province of Connacht. <\/span>Later, after she remarries to the Mayor of Galway 1596, it is said that her bridge building generosity was recognized by an eagle flying by and dropping the golden ring onto her lap. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Then, there\u2019s your second Joyce: Richard Joyce, whose story is perhaps the most well-recognized (and most agreed upon). This is a tale of a fisherman from the Galway Claddagh village who was captured by pirates.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

He was sold in Algiers to a local goldsmith and learned the craft so well that he earned his freedom.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Joyce returns to Claddagh, sets up his own trade in Galway, and crafts a ring for the woman he had loved who was still there and waiting for him when he came home.<\/span>\u00a0The heart symbolized Joyce\u2019s love for his bride, the two hands symbolized their friendship and the crown represented his fidelity to her.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Its enduring popularity and legacy of romance to this day is used to symbolize the status of one\u2019s relationship by those who wear it \u2013 because a good love story is always in style.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
