St. Patrick\u2019s Day is six months away\u2026 but who\u2019s really counting? We at The Gab happen to sham-rock out for celebrating Ireland\u2019s patron saint and of course, all things Ireland. We firmly believe it\u2019s never the wrong time to get excited about Ireland.<\/p>

But, here\u2019s a fun fact: A lot of what we think we know about St. Patrick and his day is, well, not always on the correct road, so to Brendan-speak. Ah yes, the legend himself. A towering figure of Ireland, the primary patron saint of the Emerald Isle and icon of the biggest international celebration of being (at least for the day) Irish. So who was he, really? Turns out St. Patrick \u2013 not actually Irish. British-born in the 4th century, he was kidnapped at age 16 and worked as an enslaved animal herdsman.<\/p>

Upon escape and return to Britain he decided to go back to Ireland as a missionary after a dream, detailed in in one of his writings, Confessio. He\u2019s credited for having widely spread the Christian religion to the Picts and pagan Ireland. There\u2019s also something about snakes in there too, more on that coming up next.<\/p>

You don\u2019t have to go through the troubles of a saint to see the beauty of Ireland and Britain \u2013 we\u2019ve got plenty of\u00a0trips that take you to both<\/a>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Corned beef and cabbage for Ireland? Never met her. Sure it\u2019s a dish most people eat for St. Patrick\u2019s, but mainly in non-Irish countries, mostly popularized in the United States as \u201ctraditional fare.\u201d In Ireland herself, you\u2019ll probably dine on dishes like shepherd\u2019s pie, roast, or perhaps an Irish stew. Ireland\u2019s food tours, like in\u00a0Dublin or Galway<\/a>\u00a0give you a true taste of what\u2019s on the menu. And of course, if you imbibe, let us remind you to not forget your Guinness or Jameson.<\/p>

As for those snakes we mentioned earlier \u2013 St. Patrick\u2019s big claim to fame is thought to have been driving all the snakes out of Ireland. Not quite what you think though \u2013 there\u2019s never been any actual coldblooded creatures on Ireland\u2019s craggy shores, rather, \u201csnake\u201d was an illustrative term referring to pagans.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Nothing endures quite like a good story in Ireland, it is the nation of storytellers, after all. So here\u2019s a few *gasp* shocking trivia notes about St. Patrick\u2019s Day that have traveled from the realm of reality into the world of legend.<\/p>

Green \u2013 it\u2019s the Emerald Isle and the color of Ireland and CERTAINLY the color of St. Patrick\u2026. Right? Not always as it turns out. His original color was blue, Ireland\u2019s historic color of rule. Due to its association with British rule, blue became replaced by green, associated with the push for the Irish fight for independence.<\/p>

What else is green in Ireland? it\u2019s infamously gorgeous countryside \u2013 filled with the iconic shamrock. This tiny, three-leaved clover is just as lucky as its even numbered counterpart, and its symbolic meaning predates St. Patrick\u2019s retooling as an evergreen example of the church\u2019s trinity concept. Before him, it was a welcome symbol of the coming of spring.<\/p>

While spring and St. Patrick\u2019s Day are still a half a year away, we\u2019re going to keep thinking about shamrocks and leprechauns (and\u00a0our trips to visit them<\/a>). Until the big day comes, sl\u00e1inte!<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
